Thacher offers an exceptional Montessori elementary program specializing in the education of the 6–12 year old student. The academically rich elementary curriculum includes integrated studies of basic math, geometry and algebra; speaking and writing skills; reading and grammar; the biological, zoological and physical sciences; geography and geology. Spanish, physical education, art and drama lessons enhance student learning.

During the elementary years a profound shift occurs in children. They move from the concrete to the abstract. This is the age when imagination and abstraction play a large part in enhancing their world view. Thacher’s Elementary I and II curriculum supports conceptual explorations, as children learn through their own activity guided by a daily work plan. Critical thinking, problem solving and research skills are emphasized.

At Thacher children of different ages work together in the same classroom, creating abundant opportunities for older children to provide guidance and act as models for younger children. This community of multi-aged children learning together over a three-year period encourages children to develop social skills and long-term friendships; for self-esteem to blossom; and for children to experience the dynamics of teamwork and leadership.

Guided by a trained Montessori teacher, students benefit from group lessons that challenge their specific academic abilities and interests. By working both individually and in small groups, Thacher students enjoy autonomy as well as group identity. Those who need extra time and help receive it readily along with the encouragement they need to succeed. Especially gifted children benefit from the stimulation of intellectual peers as well as encouragement to move at their own pace.

Many traditions enrich elementary school students’ experiences. Each year they enjoy a variety of field trips, go camping and explore nature.
