Listen to Thacher children talk about
why they like their school.

(Slideshow from auction.)

Founded in 1971, Thacher Montessori School is an independent school serving more than 200 children ages 3 to 14. Thacher is dedicated to nurturing children’s innate love of learning and preparing them to succeed in all aspects of life — both academically and socially.

With roots in the child-centered educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, Thacher offers a competitive academic curriculum taught in a stimulating environment where each child is inspired to become a confident, independent learner and to reach his or her highest academic potential. In addition to a core curriculum, Thacher offers enrichment classes, such as Spanish, music, art and drama, as well as extra-curricular programs and extended aftercare. Organized into multi-age groups with low student-to-teacher ratios, Thacher classrooms are designed to allow teachers to work one-on-one and in groups with their students and for children to learn from one another. Well-equipped classrooms and well-trained teachers allow children to work at levels that are challenging for them.

Thacher’s unique educational approach fosters leadership skills, problem-solving strategies and critical-thinking. Well-prepared for their academic future and challenges ahead, Thacher graduates go on to some of the finest secondary schools in New England.

OUR MISSION

Thacher Montessori School is a diverse, collaborative learning community. Through the Montessori method, we embrace each child's unique potential and cultivate a passion for discovery. We empower children to achieve academic excellence and become confident, compassionate, and proactive members of the world community.

Our Purpose

  • To prepare a nurturing and enriching learning environment for children based on their needs, incorporating the principles of Montessori education

  • To encourage respect in all aspects of school relationships, believing that respect should flow in all directions within the Thacher community

  • To protect and develop each child’s self esteem, believing that a strong self-image is essential to the total development of the child

  • To foster a sense of community among staff, students, and their families in which diversity is valued, individual opinions are respected, and a life-long love of learning is promoted

  • To provide a framework in which children can work together and learn from one another; where choices are allowed, creativity is encouraged, and independence is balanced by self-discipline

  • To recognize the individuality of each child, respecting the need for each child to progress at his or her own rate, and believing in the unlimited potential of the human spirit

  • To encourage problem-solving and critical thinking skills

  • To advocate for the rights and needs of children

To develop in the children a sense of responsibility to one’s self, the community, and the universe
